Thank you, Gary Doherty, for the amazing Think Self-Belief event recently, which was a great success and huge energy in the room. As one of the speakers, I thought I’d share with you my story and key lessons one at a time.
I was working as a senior leader in business for 5 years, and the business was growing well, I was busy learning so many new things, progressing through different roles. I was working hard, running at life 100mph with everything and not taking any down time or looking after myself. One Monday morning at 29 I woke up and couldn’t lift my head off the pillow. Attending dozens of doctors and consultants, they all came to the same conclusion – medically there was nothing wrong with me. For 6 months I lay in bed, only having the energy to move from bed to the sofa. During times like this I learnt your physical and emotional health are impacted, as well as your self-belief as you’re not able to achieve the things you really want to do. It seems like common sense, but I learnt the lesson of the importance of taking care of myself. This is the lesson I still have to work hard on. I focus on exercise, taking time out, noticing when I’m reaching burn out stage and enjoying the simple things in life. I tell people now, when you doubt you need to focus on yourself my advice is your no good to anyone else unless you take care of your own health and wellbeing, and you’ll definitely not achieve the success you want if you’re not well. A mentor previously said to me, “Cara can you slow down because I’m in a hurry”. So for leaders like myself, who want to do everything at superspeed, remember you need time to refuel to take on the next challenge.
